Let's get the obvious out of the way - a jazz bass this is most certainly not! While we're not really sure why Fender and Flea insisted on calling it that, we're going to give them a pass and overlook the misnomer because this really is an awesome addition to Fender's line-up. It certainly reminds us a lot more of a different build that Leo Fender invented for a different company once he left Fender in the late 60's. But this is not your grandaddy's 'ray either. It's got a sound all of its own and that classic Fender build quality that we've all come to know and love but with the attitude and aggression that you'd expect out of a bass that Flea uses when he plays live to rock out with the Chili Peppers. When performing live, Flea needs a bit more punch and growl, and a bit less of a mid-scoop than his jazz basses give him. We've seen Flea performing with basses similar to this one for decades now made by various brands. It seems his marriage with Fender has inspired them to put their spin on this tried and true design. The humbucker is powerful and lives right in that sweet spot on the body that gives you the perfect amount of natural mid-range for that articulate growl along with plenty of sizzling treble and a tight bottom end. The Aguilar active pre-amp is great for giving the signal an adrenaline shot and really brings the sound to life. The bass and treble EQ knobs can be used to fine-tune the sound exactly the way you need it. This is perfect for the bassist that wants to look over at their headstock and have that reassurance that the "Fender" logo brings while being able to punch through any mix with a sound that's a bit different from the traditional Jazz or Precision offerings of the past.
